The classic idea for a perfect Florida vacation is a classic old motel. But they are hard to find.
These rapidly disappearing lodging spots have fallen victim to changes in fashion and the Interstate highway system.
Some have survived; most beachside towns have one or two.
If you have some ideas for motels, please add them below. We need your help compiling a list of motels. We would love it if motel owners themselves would add to the list.
Criteria include:
- Cleanliness (duh!)
- Honesty of approach. For instance, is the decor overdone, or simple and appropriate to the building. We won’t exclude anyone, but we do like this.
- Friendliness: Part of the appeal of the old motel was that it was family run. Is this the case, or is it merely an investment property?
- Pricing. Certainly, while we want to be supporting classic, family-owned properties, is the cost of the motel in relation to the quality of the product?
- Style of restoration and renovation: Is the preservation of the motel done well, or are there cheap additions to it that make the experience sup-par?
- Location and safety: Is the motel safe, and are the other patrons of good reputation?
Please leave comments below. Thanks.
