Gatorade

Historic Photos of the University of Florida by Steve Rajtar released

GAINESVILLE – One of the largest universities in the United States, the University of Florida is home to 17 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes. Researchers at the University of Florida are credited with creating the famous sports drink Gatorade.

With fact-filled photo captions and chapter introductions by Steve Rajtar, Historic Photos of the University of Florida rediscovers the fascinating past of one of America’s great universities through nearly 200 rare photographs culled from the Florida State Archives; University of Florida Archives, Department of Special and Area Studies Collections; George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, all showcased with exceptional clarity and beauty.

From adopting the orange and black “Gator” team and becoming coed, to rabid football enthusiasm and national prominence in academics, and much more, the University of Florida enjoys a distinguished history, captured here in vivid black-and-white photography.

“What this book might do is surprise people who only know the campus as it appears today, who don’t realize that the school had roots elsewhere and had early training focused on agriculture and military science,” says author Rajtar.

Historic Photos of the University of Florida is part of Nashville-based Turner Publishing’s Historic Photos series.
