When traveling from the Northeast and Atlantic states to the West Coast of Florida, Route 301 is the fastest route, avoiding the frequent backups on Interstate 4. It’s a route with some charms, and speed traps. The speeds run from 65 mph to 45 mph; each town along the way decides, and has a fellow standing by waiting.
Actually, there really aren’t any speed traps; you just have to be careful along the way because the slow areas seem not to feel like towns. The speed limits are clearly marked; you just have to pay attention. Quite amusing are the “Lawtey Speed Trap” billboards that were obviously put there by someone who got major tickets in order to warn other drivers.
Do make a point to stop at The Orange Shop in Citra. Open seasonally, it’s a true grove stand, with all sorts of citrus gifts.
Also, stop in at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park. It’s a beautiful setting, and takes you back to the time and setting of her famous novel, The Yearling.
